A letter from HPA Executive Director Barbara Lange

Dear HPA Friends,

Last week’s HPA Tech Retreat in Palm Springs provided wonderful thought provoking conversations and sessions, much-needed time with friends, and the chance to enjoy the Retreat’s unmistakable character.   Along the way, a few important developments were announced and I’d like to take this opportunity to touch upon them.

Leon Silverman announced that he is stepping down as President of the HPA, an organization he helped found and which he has steered for the last fourteen years. During the Tech Retreat, Leon handed the baton – literally and figuratively – to Seth Hallen.  All of us who are involved in HPA are indebted to Leon for his vision and passion in launching an incredible group that serves as a beacon and gathering spot for a changing industry. Fortunately, Leon will continue to serve on the Board of Directors in the newly created role of Past President. Seth will bring his deep experience in the industry to his presidency, as well as a profound dedication to, and love of, the HPA. Seth has served as a Board member since 2007, working closely with Leon on management and direction for HPA. He has a slate of ideas to share and the enthusiasm and talent to execute them. With a grateful nod to the first 14 years of HPA, we are all very excited to move forward into the next phase of the HPA with Seth at the helm.

Since the launch of the Hollywood Post Alliance in 2004, post production has seen constant change.  Technologies, workflows, companies, and talents have shifted, not away from post but expanding upon it.  As a way of acknowledging the widening tapestry of companies and individuals who bring brilliance and innovation to the business of making media content, we have officially completed the transition as we change our name to the Hollywood Professional Association.  “Professional” is a more accurate and inclusive description of the work in which we are all engaged. We unveiled the name as well as a brand new identity, both of which you’ll see in all communications and events from now on.

In other important news, HPA is going global! The HPA Tech Retreat UK will be held in Oxfordshire, the 13th and 14th of July. Building on the solid aspects of the HPA Tech Retreat – SuperSession, Breakfast Roundtables, fantastic networking and fun, Innovation Zone, which run alongside carefully curated sessions – the HPA Tech Retreat UK will definitely have a British flare and flavor. Richard Welsh and Jerry Pierce are co-chairs of the program committee, which is putting together a fantastic slate of presentations that properly reflect the Tech Retreat style.  Registration is already open at, and earlybird discounts are available through 2 April.  Expect more news, exciting panels and events to be announced over the coming weeks.

As we head into the next phase of the HPA, it’s an honor to serve as your Executive Director, and build on the work that has come before. I hope to make this letter a regular communication to you, keeping you apprised of new association developments.  And I am quite open to hearing your feedback, so do feel free to send your thoughts and ideas to me at  I look forward to working with you in the year to come as we take new and exciting steps together.  As our newly past president is fond of saying, our best work is ahead of us!

Transition in organizational leadership announced at HPA Tech Retreat

February 17, 2016 (Indian Wells, California) Hollywood Professional Association (HPA®) President Leon Silverman has announced he will be stepping down as president of the organization that he helped found to make room for the next generation of leadership and a newly expanded Board of Directors. In his traditional remarks made today during the opening session of the 2016 HPA Tech Retreat, Silverman also announced that the HPA Board has elected Seth Hallen to succeed him. Hallen, SVP of Global Creative Services at Sony DADC New Media Solutions, has been an HPA Board Member since 2007, working closely with Silverman and the Board on a number of key initiatives and management of the organization. Silverman will continue to serve on the Board of Directors in the newly created role of Past President.

In 2002, Silverman spearheaded a coalition of post production executives to help launch the Hollywood Post Alliance. Originally envisioned as a place where individuals and companies would share information, build a community voice, and provide education, the HPA quickly established its role as an important trade organization. The HPA has grown and taken root under his stewardship, and formalized an alliance with SMPTE in November 2015. Silverman, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the HPA Awards in November, 2015, said, “Launching and leading HPA, shoulder to shoulder with a dedicated and impressive board, staff, and volunteers, has been one of the most exciting and rewarding accomplishments of my career. It has been a true honor to work together with so many colleagues within our phenomenal community, especially during these exciting times of industry transition and expansion. With the stability of our organization, especially now that we are part of SMPTE and
with the strength of our newly expanded and reinvigorated Board, it is a terrific time to pass the baton to the next generation of capable and committed leadership. Seth is a passionate leader with the focus and vision for the future that is needed to continue the growth of the HPA. Equally important, he is a wonderful friend, and a great team builder. I am proud to be working with Seth and the broadened HPA Board as we head towards a future in which our HPA mission and message is increasingly relevant.”

Newly elected HPA Board Member Bill Roberts, CFO of Panavision, will assume Treasurer responsibilities on the Board of Directors as Phil Squyres steps down from the post he has held since HPA’s founding. Squyres will remain on the Board. The HPA Board of Directors has grown over the past year with a number of key additions, including newly elected Board members Craig German, SVP Studio Post at NBCUniversal Media, Jenni McCormick, Executive Director of American Cinema Editors (ACE); and Chuck Parker, CEO of SohoNet. Wendy Aylsworth, Past President of SMPTE, was appointed as SMPTE representative on the HPA Board. Barbara Lange serves as Executive Director of SMPTE and HPA. The new Board members join Mark Chiolis, Carolyn Giardina, Vincent Maza, Kathleen Milnes, Loren Nielsen, and Vice President Jerry Pierce on the HPA Board of Directors.

Hallen commented on his new role, “The HPA is a unique and important place where creative talent, technical talent, and companies join forces to learn and share as they expand their perspectives and shape our industry. It is a distinct honor to continue the important work that Leon has undertaken for this organization, and I am clearly dedicated to making the next phase of HPA a great one. Enabling our industry to evolve by fueling our community with ideas, opportunity and recognition remains our goal. I look forward to working with our incredibly talented and dedicated board and continuing our collaboration with our colleagues at SMPTE, and the staff, volunteers and community that are the heart and soul of HPA, as we build upon the work of the past 14 years and look toward the future.”

Also today at the HPA Tech Retreat, the Hollywood Post Alliance formally and officially assumed its new moniker – the Hollywood Professional Association. The organization’s new name was revealed last year at the 2015 HPA Tech Retreat, and the transition to the Hollywood Professional Association identity formalizes the broader mission and focus of the organization while acknowledging the changing nature of the industry. Along with the name, a new corporate identity was unveiled.

HPA and SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange noted, “The nature of the work and responsibilities that our community is engaged in has changed, and will continue to change. After carefully exploring how to address this growth, it became clear that Professional more accurately and inclusively identifies the creative talent, content holders, global infrastructure of services as well as emerging processes and platforms. As an organization, we are dedicated to seeing beyond the horizon to the wider future, and bringing a wide array of individuals and companies into the organization. Our new name and identity makes that statement.”

LOS ANGELES—As part of the upcoming SMPTE 2015 conference in Los Angeles, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and Hollywood Post Alliance will host the SMPTE-HPA Student Film Festival. This one day festival, which will take place Tuesday, Oct. 27, recognizes the use and portrayal of technology in student films from all across the globe.

Postproduction Group Renames, Seeks to Expand Reach in Hollywood

The Hollywood Post Alliance last week announced it was rebranding itself as it looks to become more inclusive. The new Hollywood Professional Alliance plans to make room for an increasing number of entertainment production disciplines.

There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that keeps the film and television industries moving. And a trade group focused on postproduction work now wants to represent more “industry professionals working and serving across a much broader collaborative media ecosystem.”

The Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA®), the trade association serving the professional community of businesses and individuals providing expertise, support, tools and infrastructure for the creation and finishing of motion pictures, television, commercials, digital media and other dynamic media content, announced today that the organization has become The Hollywood Professional Alliance. The announcement was made during the association’s 21st Annual HPA Technology Retreat currently underway in Indian Wells, California. HPA will continue to serve as the organization’s acronym.

The Hollywood Post Alliance, whose traditional focus on the needs of the post production service industry, has helped to lead the conversation on the impact of the changing face of content creation and media. Over the course of the past two decades, the post production industry has been at the center of the most dynamic, technical and creative changes impacting the entertainment industry. These advances include camera technologies, visual effects, 3D, editing platforms, content security, creative collaboration technologies, display, content delivery and archive. The Board of Directors of the HPA undertook renaming the organization to reflect this dynamic environment. The Board believes that the new name will serve its current membership and welcome an ever-widening constituency.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA, said of the transition, “The mission of the HPA will remain the same: to serve as a hub, thought leadership center and communications engine for our industry as changes in the creative process continue to motivate new ways of working. We believe that Professional is more inclusive and more accurately encompasses the creative talent, content holders, global infrastructure of services, as well as new and emerging platforms and processes that stretch from idea to display. The time has come to acknowledge the evolution of ‘post,’ and to focus on the professional community creating and executing the vision from a broad base of expertise.”

The HPA is in the midst of a consolidation with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®), which is expected to be finalized in March of this year. Under the terms of that merger, the HPA will remain an independent organization, while fully collaborating on the many issues and interests they share.

Barbara Lange, Executive Director of SMPTE, noted, “We are enthusiastic about the new name and brand for HPA. There is great symmetry between HPA and SMPTE members who share technical expertise, creative vision, and the companies who make the content and the process possible. While there is some commonality in our memberships, each organization brings new audiences and voices to the conversation. We look forward to continuing our close relationships with the HPA and its members as our organizations continue to push forward into the future.”

The major annual HPA events, The HPA Tech Retreat and The HPA Awards, are set to continue as Hollywood Professional Alliance events. New branding for the HPA will be unveiled in April 2015. President Silverman and the current Board of the HPA will remain in place.

Silverman concluded, “This change is more about the interdependence of many professional disciplines rather than us defocusing on post production. In fact, there is more post production today than at any time in the past. It’s simply that post has moved upstream of traditional ‘finishing’ workflows directly into production and is increasingly involved in optimizing content over a new and exciting array of distribution channels and platforms. We feel that the new ‘HPA’ can help broaden the dialogue and provide support for industry professionals working and serving across a much broader collaborative media ecosystem.”

In fond memory of Randy Roberts

It is with great sadness that the HPA has learned of the passing of editor, producer and director Randy Roberts. A tireless advocate for American Cinema Editors, where he served on the board for nearly 20 years including stints as vice president and president, Randy will be missed by everyone he touched. Randy was most recently the recipient of the 2014 HPA Lifetime Achievement Award and we send our condolences to his family.

Former ACE President Randy Roberts Dies at 69

The editor, producer and director edited series such as ‘Chicago Hope,’ ‘L.A. Law’ and ‘Early Edition’

Editor, producer and director Randy Roberts died Monday in his Los Angeles home after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 69.

He was the award-winning editor of hit series including Chicago HopeL.A. Law and Early Edition. But for all who knew him, he will most be remembered as a friend, mentor and champion of film editors.

Roberts served on American Cinema Editors’ board of directors for nearly two decades, as vp from 2005-08 and as president from 2008-12. Earlier this year, he received ACE’s Heritage Award for his lifetime commitment to ACE. And last month, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hollywood Post Alliance.

Presenting the HPA Award, Wolf Films’ executive producer Arthur Fortney said of Roberts: “When you begin your career in any industry, you hope to find someone who believes in your talent, you’re especially blessed if they help shape you as an artist and as a human being. That person for me is my dear friend Randy Roberts. His belief in me has helped me with who I am today.” He concluded by saluting Roberts’ “leadership and passion for ACE.”

For Chicago Hope, Roberts won an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award as well as an Emmy nomination and a second Eddie nomination. He earned two additional Eddie nominations, for L.A. Law and Early Edition. He also contributed to the phenomenal success of the long-running series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit from 2001-11, starting as a co-producer and becoming supervising producer in 2003.

Roberts was an L.A. native — his father was head of casting at Warner Bros. and his mother was an extra. By age 10, he had found his love of the business, initially as a child actor, with roles including on a 1956 episode of Warner Bros. Presents with Elizabeth Montgomery. Later, he started to work in Warners’ mailroom when his uncle, film editor Sam O’Steen, introduced him to editing.

Roberts began as an assistant to Gene Mumford (On the Waterfront) and went on to earn a string of film and TV credits including Straight Time (1978), co-edited with O’Steen; and Players, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and One from the Heart for Francis Ford Coppola. He also edited Magic Journey, a 3D attraction for the Kodak Pavilion at Disney’s Epcot Center. And he directed episodes of Tour of Duty, Miami Vice, L.A. Law and Early Edition.

He retired from Law & Order in 2011, and during his illness continued to actively contribute his efforts to ACE while maintaining his sense of humor and positive outlook. He was always ready with comments such as this: “The sooner you get behind, the more time you have to catch up.”

He leaves behind his partner, editor Heidi Scharfe; his daughter, Taylor, son-in-law, Cesar; and grandchildren Carmen and Kennedy.

The day-long event is set for Monday, October 20, 2014, at Hollywood’s historic El Capitan Theatre. The event brings together top technology experts and leading filmmakers to explore the impact of enriched image and sound technologies for today’s content creators.

As the changing techniques and workflows in production and post meet an equally evolving environment in distribution and audience options, the HPA plays an invaluable role in helping to make sense of an increasingly complex and evolving content ecosystem. The SMPTE 2014 Symposium will include creative sessions with renowned filmmakers, cinematographers, visual effects artists, sound specialists, and colorists providing an in-depth discussion on the challenges they face and the expansive opportunities now open to them with new tools to support their vision.
