Call for Entries Opens for Two Special HPA® Awards

Call for Entries Opens for Two Special HPA® Awards
Submissions Now Accepted for Engineering Excellence Award and Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation for the 10th Annual Ceremony

(Hollywood, CA)  April 12, 2015 – The Hollywood Professional Alliance (HPA®) has announced that the call for entries is now open for two special HPA Awards: the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation.  Celebrating its 10th year, the HPA Awards recognize the achievements of the individuals and companies that have contributed to groundbreaking technologies and creative excellence within the professional media content industry. Both special awards will be presented at the 2015 HPA Awards on the evening of November 12, 2015 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is recognized as one of the most prestigious technology honors in the industry. It spotlights companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop important technologies that enable capability and creativity in content production, finishing, distribution and archive. Submissions for this peer-judged award may include products or processes, and must represent a step forward for its industry beneficiaries. Any individual, group of individuals or entity driving innovation focused on the professional media content industry is encouraged to submit an entry for the award.

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or in technical innovation. Submissions for the award can include content such as a unique movie, TV program or commercial; a workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset, or a creative approach that is not eligible for consideration in other HPA Award categories. A jury of industry experts determines the award’s winners.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA, noted, “The HPA itself, especially as part of SMPTE, sits at the intersection of technology and content creation, bringing together the mutually vibrant creativity of both those who provide tools and those who use them. These special awards recognize the role that technology, engineering and workflow increasingly play in our industry.”

For both special awards, the call for entries is opening sooner than in prior years.  Entries for both the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation will be accepted until May 22, 2015.

“For 10 years, the HPA Awards have shined a light on the work that is done by so many individuals and organizations which help bring stories to life in bigger and more compelling ways than ever before,” Silverman concluded. “The announcement of these two special awards is the kick off to our awards season, and I am certain that these, and every category, will be full of inspiration and imagination.”

Over the past decade, previous Engineering Excellence Award winners have included Dolby Laboratories, Sony Electronics, ARRI, and NVIDIA; and winners of the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation have included Light Iron, FotoKem, Park Road Post Production, and DigitalFilm Tree.

In addition to these special awards, the HPA Awards honor the important post production categories of: Outstanding Color Grading, Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects for feature film, television and commercials. The call for entries in these categories will be announced at an upcoming date.

Complete rules, guidelines and entry information are available at: www.hpaawards.net. Hollywood Post Alliance to Honor Alan Heim, ACE, and Randy Roberts, ACE, with Lifetime Achievement Awards

Hollywood Post Alliance to Honor Alan Heim, ACE, and
Randy Roberts, ACE, with Lifetime Achievement Awards
Organization Will Recognize the Careers and Contributions of Influential Editors

October 21, 2014 (Los Angeles, CA) The Hollywood Post Alliance® (HPA) has announced that Alan Heim, ACE, and Randy Roberts, ACE, will each receive one of the organization’s highest honors, the Lifetime Achievement Award. The special awards, which are determined by the HPA Board of Directors and a select committee, are presented to honorees whose contributions to the field of post production are significant. Heim and Roberts will be on hand to accept their awards at the 9th Annual HPA Awards Show on November 6, 2014, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA, said, “The bonds between editors and other members of the post production community are amongst the most binding. It is an honor to celebrate the work of these two wonderful men with this award, which is given in recognition of their creativity, dedication and service to our industry. Alan and Randy have both served as President of American Cinema Editors, bringing awareness and respect to the role of editorial during this exciting time of industry transition. In addition, they have made important contributions to the art and craft of editing through their hard work and dedication. It is a personal and professional honor to be able to recognize them with this award. I have been honored to have worked with both Randy and Alan in our professional roles as well as in the HPA’s collaboration with ACE for many years. I could not be more delighted to give these two men this award, which means so much to me personally and to the HPA.”

Alan Heim, ACE
HPA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Alan Heim, ACE is a native New Yorker whose credits and awards span feature films and television. Early in his career, he worked on many television shows as a sound editor, eventually working with Sidney Lumet on a number of films including The Pawnbroker and The Group, and with Mel Brooks on the original version of The Producers. He also worked as a music editor on Paul Newman’s Rachel, Rachel. He then became a picture editor and edited The Sea Gull for Lumet, The Twelve Chairs with Brooks, and many other projects, including Godspell, She’s Having a Baby and Funny Farm. Heim was nominated for an Emmy® for Liza With a Z, directed by Bob Fosse. That was the beginning of a collaboration that spanned three films: Lenny, All That Jazz and Star 80. Heim won an Oscar, BAFTA, and ACE Eddie Award for All That Jazz. He also edited Network for Lumet, for which he was again nominated for an Oscar. Heim moved to Los Angles in 1994, where he worked on American History X, The Notebook and Alpha Dog. In addition, Heim won an Emmy for editing the miniseries Holocaust, and was nominated for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, and Grey Gardens. He is currently President of both ACE and the Motion Picture Editors Guild.

Heim commented, “I learned to edit on the Moviola, then the Kem and Steenbeck and other venerable mechanical systems and have spent some years meeting with many of the people who have advanced the technologies that impact the editing room. We are all in service to telling great stories. I have been privileged to be a part of my community – MPEG and ACE – and that work continues to be very important to me. To be honored with this award from my peers in the post production community is extremely meaningful, and the recognition of my colleagues is deeply appreciated.”

Randy Roberts, ACE
Honoree Randy Roberts, ACE, has served the American Cinema Editors tirelessly for nearly two decades; as a member of the board of directors since 1996, as vice president from 2005-2008, as president from 2008-2012, and currently as the organization’s director of marketing. Roberts is one of the originators of EditFest, a global series of editing festivals that highlight the art and business of film editing. He helped to implement ACE Tech Day to help ensure that the organization’s membership remain at the top of their field in technology. Born into the entertainment industry in Burbank, California, Roberts began his career in front of the camera with a number of roles in movies, TV shows and commercials during his youth. Eventually, he worked his way into the Film Editing Department at Warner Bros. and an apprenticeship with the union.  His first feature film editing credit was on Richard Pryor’s Greased Lightning, followed by projects with Francis Ford Coppola (One from the Heart), Robert Evans (Players), David E. Kelley and Dick Wolf, to name just a few. In addition to his motion picture and television editing credits, which include Chicago Hope, LA Law, The Agency and Tour of Duty, Roberts’ career has also included directing a number of episodes of network television, but his first love remained the cutting room. He spent the last decade working as supervising producer on the long-running hit series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. He is an ACE Eddie Award winner and nominee, a Primetime Emmy Award nominee, and the recipient of the American Cinema Editors’ Heritage Award.

Of being honored, Roberts said, “My career in this industry is an incredibly important part of my life, coaxing stories into life, working with some of the greatest people I have ever known. I have enjoyed the collaboration and participation of so many people and companies in the post production community, and it has consistently been a great partnership. To receive this award from my friends at the HPA is heartwarming and means the world to me. I am personally grateful, but also want to say thank you for recognizing the incredibly important role of editors in our industry.”

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement honors, winners in 12 craft categories, special awards for Creativity and Innovation, and the Engineering Excellence Award will be bestowed at the HPA Awards gala on November 6th.

The HPA Announces 2014 Winners of
Engineering Excellence Awards and
HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

MACOM, NVIDIA, Wohler/Cinnafilm for Engineering Excellence,
ASC-CDL, DigitalFilm Tree Garner Honors for Creativity and Innovation

September 30, 2014 (Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Post Alliance® has announced recipients of the organization’s 2014 Engineering Excellence Award and the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production. These awards were developed to recognize the technical excellence and creative innovation that continually drive the post production industry in the advancement and support of content creation. The coveted honors will be bestowed on November 6th, 2014 during the ninth annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The Engineering Excellence Award spotlights companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity and apply it to real world post production demands while raising the profile of breakthrough technologies.

The winners of the 2014 HPA Engineering Excellence Awards are:

MACOM: 12G-SDI Chipset
12G-SDI is the next data rate in the evolution of SDI, and MACOM has introduced the industry’s first complete chipset to enable next-generation 4K video production applications.  Our newest family of SDI equalizers, reclockers and cable drivers supports 4K video resolutions at 60 frames per second over a single link and complements our industry-leading crosspoint switch portfolio.

“The MACOM team is honored to accept an Engineering Excellence Award from the Hollywood Post Alliance,” said Hasnain Bajwa, Senior Vice President and General Manager, High-Performance Analog at MACOM. “We are encouraged to be recognized for our technical achievement by such an esteemed panel of industry insiders and thankful for the contributions of our customers, partners and supporters as we help to enable the migration to 12G-SDI for the next generation of broadcast video equipment.”

NVIDIA: NVIDIA VCA
Accelerate design and VFX workflows with NVIDIA® Visual Computing Appliance (VCA), the fastest way to interactive photorealistic digital 3D models and scenes. This network-attached appliance easily integrates into the design workflow and scales to multiple VCAs, each decreasing the time to noiseless, physically based global illumination.

“The Hollywood Post Alliance’s recognition of NVIDIA VCA is validation of how our GPU rendering appliance is changing the way filmmakers, artists and animators work. NVIDIA VCA removes the need to wait hours for rendered movies and allows artists to interact and edit their photo-real digital models in real time, dramatically accelerating the review and approval process,” said Jeff Brown, vice president and general manager of Professional Visualization and Design at NVIDIA.

Wohler/Cinnafilm Joint Venture: Tachyon Wormhole
Tachyon Wormhole is a file-based Retiming and Standards Transcoding solution which leverages commodity enterprise hardware to deliver content based on time or standards requirements. Fully automated with audio pitch correction and caption retiming, Tachyon Wormhole processes two files faster than real time, simultaneously, on a single small footprint server.

Ernie Sanchez, COO, Cinnafilm, Inc. commented, “Because it is peer-based, few awards invoke the same sense of pride as the HPA Engineering Excellence award. We are truly honored to be recognized a second time by the HPA for our achievements, and we are thrilled that we earned it through intelligent partnering with the team at Wohler.”

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. A jury of peers and industry experts determines the HPA Judges Award winners.

The 2014 winners of the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production are:

American Society of Cinematographers: Color Decision List (ASC CDL)
The ASC CDL helps maintain and communicate creative intent, from production, dailies, post, VFX, editorial, in a multi-facility, multi-vendor environment. The ASC CDL enables creatives to set the look of a shot via system-independent primary color corrections communicated as metadata from on-set through dailies and post. Developed by the ASC Technology Committee – a broad group of industry members working to benefit the industry – the ASC CDL is freely available, saving time and money, improving the artistic result and audience experience in the vast majority of motion pictures, TV shows, and VFX.

David Reisner, D-Cinema Consulting commented, “We are honored to be recognized by our colleagues at the HPA. The ASC CDL was developed to help all participants in the production and post pipeline most effectively produce the best result and deliver the creative vision of filmmakers to audiences. The ASC CDL could only have been created by filmmakers, the post community, and vendors’ active collaboration.”

DigitalFilm Tree: Cloud Post Workflow Initiative  (ProStack)
ProStack enables instantly accessible, widely deployable post production. ProStack packs the capacity and bandwidth needed to manage the entire post process- high-end color correction, VFX and DI workflows- into a scalable solution. Flexible design and implementation incorporates the best tools for every job, connecting all users via cloud storage. ProStack, in conjunction with Critique, integrates the entire spectrum of file-based workflows into one hub, while simultaneously embracing the evolving role of production and the post facility.

Guillaume Aubuchon, DigitalFilm Tree CTO commented, “We have been focused on developing a system that is truly cloud based and easily useable for our clients, an OpenStack environment with secure and instantaneous access. It is an honor to be recognized by the HPA for our work on ProStack, and we are honored to receive our second C&I Award.”

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA commented, “The HPA Awards have become an important acknowledgement and celebration of creativity in content, technology and workflow innovation. This year’s awards for Engineering Excellence and Creativity and Innovation in Post Production represent significant and foundational new approaches. The HPA is proud to be able to recognize these outstanding achievements.”

Coveted Honor Recognizes Outstanding Technologies for Post Production

June 11, 2014 (Los Angeles, CA)    The Hollywood Post Alliance has announced the 2014 Call for Entries for its Engineering Excellence Award. The Engineering honor showcases inventors, manufacturers, vendors and/or peer post production companies for outstanding product or technology application offerings. Valid offerings may include products or processes, and must represent a step forward for its industry beneficiaries. The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is recognized as one of the most important technology honors in the post production industry.

The Engineering Excellence Award spotlights the companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity and apply it to real world post production demands. Any individual, group of individuals or entity offering a submitted entry to the post production industry at large can submit an entry for the Award. Launched in 2006, the HPA Awards have become the standard by which creative and technical excellence in the art, science and craft of post production is measured.
