HPA OPENS 2016 CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD AND JUDGES AWARD FOR CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

11TH Annual HPA Awards Now Accepting Submissions
for Two Prestigious Awards

April 6, 2016 (Hollywood, CA) The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA®) has announced that the call for entries will open today for two coveted HPA Awards: the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation. Submissions will be accepted from April 6, 2016 to May 20, 2016. These special awards will be bestowed at the 2016 HPA Awards gala on the evening of November 17, 2016 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is recognized as one of the most important technology honors in the industry, spotlighting companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop breakthrough technologies. Submissions for this peer-judged award may include products or processes, and must represent a step forward for its industry beneficiaries. The date for presentations to peer judging panels will be announced soon, and is scheduled to take place on a Saturday in June in Los Angeles. Past winners have included Dolby, Canon, NVIDIA, MACOM, The Foundry, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Panasonic and Quantel.

The sought-after HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. Submissions for this special award can include content such as a unique feature film, TV program or commercial, a workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset, or a creative approach that is not eligible for consideration in other HPA Award categories. A blue ribbon panel determines the award’s winners following the presentations in June. Past winners have included ESPN Digital Center 2, DigitalFiIm Tree, the American Society of Cinematographers: Color Decision List (ASC CDL), Testronic and EFILM.

Seth Hallen, President of the HPA, noted, “The Engineering Excellence Award shows us, year after year, the brilliance of the individuals and companies who consistently help creative vision come to life. Our entrants master and share their ideas and technical acumen, which helps foster and drive creativity. To see the presentations for both Engineering Excellence and Creativity and Innovation, and to witness the competitive playing field where the presenters operate, is inspirational. As we enter our second decade of the HPA Awards, the industry has grown to place great value in being recognized for these awards. As the call for entries in these categories kicks off our 11th season, we look forward to the submissions which represent the latest in our industry’s excellence and innovation.”

Joachim Zell, Chair of the Engineering Excellence Award noted, “The most important part of the HPA Awards is the opportunity to show how our efforts enable creativity for storytellers. The Engineering Excellence Award has always been a highly competitive honor that gives the engineering community a chance to be recognized for the invaluable and important work in which they are engaged. The Creativity and Innovation Award is equally prestigious, recognizing the brilliant ideas that don’t necessarily fit neatly into other categories. We strongly encourage you to enter your ideas.”

Entries for both the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation will be accepted until May 20, 2016.

In addition, the HPA Awards will again honor important craft categories including Outstanding Color Grading, Editing, Sound and Visual Effects for feature film, television and commercials. The call for entries in these creative categories will be announced shortly.

A chat with post production veteran Leon Silverman

This industry mainstay will be receiving the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award this month.

By Randi Altman

Leon Silverman is an industry icon. He’s GM of the Digital Studio at Walt Disney Studios and president of the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA), the organization that is presenting him with its Lifetime Achievement Award on November 12.

I’ve known Leon for a very long time, meeting him for the first time when he was a senior executive of LaserPacific. He was then, and still remains, a genuinely good guy who has done a lot to help create a feeling of community within an industry filled with competitive businesses. He has also been a big supporter of me personally, for which I will always be grateful.

Anyway, not long before the late October SMPTE Conference in Hollywood, Leon was kind enough to talk to me about the Lifetime Achievement Award, the SMPTE and HPA growing partnership and the industry in general.

Leon will be accepting the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award on November 12.

When I asked him how it felt to be chosen for this honor, he was humble, saying, “It’s flattering, embarrassing, and it means a lot to me. It reminds me of those who have helped, mentored me and taught me in my life and career — those who helped me along the path. What it’s really about is how the industry has made transitions, and how the recognition of me is really the recognition of a lot of people who contributed to transformative change in our industry.”

Leon’s passion for the media and entertainment business started early — he says ever since he could remember. In school he was the projectionist and worked at the high school radio station. He was also known to hop the train into downtown Chicago and stare into the window at the WLS radio station and watch them broadcast. He thought it was “the most interesting thing in the world.” So imagine how he felt after taking a tour of CBS Television with his friend’s dad. He was hooked.

Hollywood Post Alliance Announces Winner of Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

HPA_Gold Logo_2015

Hollywood Post Alliance Announces
Winner of Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation
ESPN Digital Center 2 to Receive Prestigious Honor

August 26, 2015 (Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Post Alliance® (HPA) – the organization serving the professional community of businesses and individuals who provide expertise, support, tools and the infrastructure for the creation and finishing of motion pictures, television, commercials, digital media and other dynamic media content – has announced that ESPN has been named the recipient of the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation for its ESPN Digital Center 2.

The Creativity and Innovation Award was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. A jury of peers and industry experts named ESPN’s Digital Center 2 the 2015 Creativity and Innovation Award winner during a recent judging session in Los Angeles. The coveted honor will be bestowed on November 12th, 2015 at the 10th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

ESPN Digital Center 2, at its launch, was widely considered to be the first large-scale, IP-based production facility of its kind in the world. The awards jury felt that ESPN’s entry represented technical innovation in the IP-based production, post production and broadcast space, noting that the entry showed vision and leadership by deploying a framework that others could, and likely will, follow.

Aaron LaBerge, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for ESPN, said, “ESPN is a content company at heart. But if content is our heart, technology is our mind. The two will always be inextricably linked. Our ability to use technology to create, enhance and distribute content has been, and continues to be, one of our key advantages. It enables us to fulfill our most basic mission: To Serve Sports Fans. Anytime. Anywhere. Digital Center 2 is the physical and philosophical embodiment of that premise, and a reflection of the many amazing people that made it a reality. We are honored to be named as this year’s recipient of the HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation.”

Leon Silverman, HPA President, noted, “Our Creativity and Innovation Award recognizes companies and individuals who truly push the boundaries, using ingenuity and insight to advance the industry and to serve audiences in new and better ways. ESPN has done just that with its Digital Center 2, and our judges agreed that this is a remarkable accomplishment. Congratulations to ESPN, we are pleased to honor them with our Creativity and Innovation Award. This year’s field of entrants was truly outstanding, and I want to acknowledge all of those companies and individuals who submitted their outstanding ideas for consideration. It is impressive to see the vibrancy of innovative and creative thought in our industry, and the HPA itself is honored to help illuminate these significant accomplishments.”

In addition to the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, the HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects. Other special awards will be presented to the recently announced winners of the Engineering Excellence Award, and to Leon Silverman, recipient of the 2015 HPA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tickets for the 10th annual HPA Awards are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.hpaawards.net. For all inquiries, call the HPA at +1(213) 614.0860 or write at info@hpaawards.net. Leon Silverman to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award
from Hollywood Post Alliance

Leading trade organization honors esteemed post production executive with special award on the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Post Alliance Awards

July 21, 2015 (Los Angeles, CA) The Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) has announced that it will present Leon Silverman with one of the organization’s highest honors, the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award. Given at the discretion of the HPA Board of Directors and a select committee, the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual whose contributions have brought about significant change in the field of post production.  Silverman will receive the award at the HPA Awards gala on November 12, 2015, at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, California.

In announcing the award, Barbara Lange, Executive Director of Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and HPA, commented, “It is a delight to honor Leon on this, the 10th anniversary of the HPA Awards.  The award shines a light on his role in the organization, his significant contributions to the post production industry, and his unfailing support of the vision of so many filmmakers.  I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Leon as we crafted the formal consolidation of HPA with SMPTE. While he is consistently insightful, what I enjoy most about working with him is the passion he brings to every endeavor, and his championship of the industry that he loves. This award honors Leon’s creativity, focus and dedication to navigating new and sometimes unchartered territories which is an inspiration to us all.”

In 2002, Silverman spearheaded a coalition of post production executives to help launch the Hollywood Post Alliance.  Originally envisioned as a place where individuals and companies would share information, build a community voice, and provide education, the HPA quickly established its role as an important trade organization. Known for its celebration of the creative community in its HPA Awards and the highly respected HPA Technology Retreat, the HPA has grown under his stewardship, and is about to formalize an alliance with SMPTE. “Joining forces with SMPTE is about the future of our  creative industry, its people and the technology that increasingly fuels it,” said Silverman. “HPA within SMPTE provides common ground for those who create content and for those who create tools and standards to share their needs and their dreams.”

Leon Silverman

A Chicago native, Leon arrived in Los Angeles shortly after his college graduation with a goal and passion to work at the iconic Compact Video. Knocking on its doors for more than 4 months, in 1977 he landed a job in their shipping and receiving department, rising through the ranks to eventually lead Compact’s Sales and Marketing efforts.  In 1982, following Compact’s founder, Silverman and several of his colleagues joined Pacific Video, which through mergers and a public offering became LaserPacific Media Corporation.  His time there was marked by groundbreaking technological innovation in the midst of a changing post production environment that featured the launch of crucial developments in industry workflow, including the beginning of non linear editorial, digital compression, the launch of high definition and the growth of digital motion picture finishing. In 2003, LaserPacific was acquired by Eastman Kodak.  In 2004, Silverman was named President of LaserPacific Media Corporation and simultaneously served Kodak as a Vice President of Entertainment Imaging and the Director of Strategic Business Development, Entertainment Imaging Services.

In 2009, Silverman was named General Manager, Digital Studio for the Walt Disney Studios.  In that role, he oversees Digital Studio Services, which provides on-lot digital infrastructure including editorial and sound post production services, digital platform distribution services, and workflow expertise as part of Studio Operations. He has overseen the construction of a new on-lot portfolio at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank that includes the Digital Studio Center housed in the Studio’s Production Building, a new editorial center in the Frank G Wells Building, and one of the industry’s first digital review theaters equipped with High Dynamic Range (HDR) laser projection capability.

The Digital Studio Center, which opened in December 2012, is a 26,000 square foot facility dedicated to digital content workflows, picture and sound editorial/design, and globally connected creative collaboration.

For over 30 years, Silverman has successfully introduced new post production technology, services and workflows to Hollywood’s creative and studio community. He has been recognized with industry accolades, including Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development for his contributions to LaserPacific’s Electronic Laboratory and, again, for the development of LaserPacific’s SuperComputer assembly process.  While at Disney, he has received 6 Disney Inventor Awards for patent pending inventions relating to motion picture workflow.

Silverman was a founder of the Hollywood Post Alliance and has served as President since its inception. He is currently serving as Governor at Large, and has served two terms as a Governor for the Hollywood Region of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), where he was named a Fellow of the Society in November of 2003. He is an Associate Member of the American Society of Cinematographers, an Affiliate Member of the American Cinema Editors and was recently invited as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

On receiving the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, Silverman said, “I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition from the HPA, the organization that is so close to my heart, and from the community that has helped to define my career. I am grateful for the many brilliant and generous mentors, colleagues and collaborators who continue to inspire me. I am constantly reminded that what we achieve in our industry, we have achieved by working closely together as a community. To be part of the exhilarating and sometimes daunting backdrop against which we work is an uncommon pleasure and honor itself, and I enjoy every day of the journey.  My sincerest thanks to the HPA and to all of those who have helped me my entire life and every day – I so appreciate your support, guidance and recognition. I will treasure this award.”

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement honors, winners in 12 craft categories, special awards for Creativity and Innovation, and the Engineering Excellence Award will be bestowed at the HPA Awards gala on November 12th at the Skirball Center.

Call for Entries Opens for Two Special HPA® Awards

Call for Entries Opens for Two Special HPA® Awards
Submissions Now Accepted for Engineering Excellence Award and Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation for the 10th Annual Ceremony

(Hollywood, CA)  April 12, 2015 – The Hollywood Professional Alliance (HPA®) has announced that the call for entries is now open for two special HPA Awards: the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation.  Celebrating its 10th year, the HPA Awards recognize the achievements of the individuals and companies that have contributed to groundbreaking technologies and creative excellence within the professional media content industry. Both special awards will be presented at the 2015 HPA Awards on the evening of November 12, 2015 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is recognized as one of the most prestigious technology honors in the industry. It spotlights companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop important technologies that enable capability and creativity in content production, finishing, distribution and archive. Submissions for this peer-judged award may include products or processes, and must represent a step forward for its industry beneficiaries. Any individual, group of individuals or entity driving innovation focused on the professional media content industry is encouraged to submit an entry for the award.

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or in technical innovation. Submissions for the award can include content such as a unique movie, TV program or commercial; a workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset, or a creative approach that is not eligible for consideration in other HPA Award categories. A jury of industry experts determines the award’s winners.

Leon Silverman, President of the HPA, noted, “The HPA itself, especially as part of SMPTE, sits at the intersection of technology and content creation, bringing together the mutually vibrant creativity of both those who provide tools and those who use them. These special awards recognize the role that technology, engineering and workflow increasingly play in our industry.”

For both special awards, the call for entries is opening sooner than in prior years.  Entries for both the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation will be accepted until May 22, 2015.

“For 10 years, the HPA Awards have shined a light on the work that is done by so many individuals and organizations which help bring stories to life in bigger and more compelling ways than ever before,” Silverman concluded. “The announcement of these two special awards is the kick off to our awards season, and I am certain that these, and every category, will be full of inspiration and imagination.”

Over the past decade, previous Engineering Excellence Award winners have included Dolby Laboratories, Sony Electronics, ARRI, and NVIDIA; and winners of the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation have included Light Iron, FotoKem, Park Road Post Production, and DigitalFilm Tree.

In addition to these special awards, the HPA Awards honor the important post production categories of: Outstanding Color Grading, Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects for feature film, television and commercials. The call for entries in these categories will be announced at an upcoming date.
