HPA Announces Winner of Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

HPA Announces Winner of
Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation
The Mill BLACKBIRD® Chosen by Blue Ribbon Judging Panel

29 August 2016 (Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has awarded its prestigious Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to The Mill BLACKBIRD®. Created by The Mill, the BLACKBIRD® is the first fully adjustable car rig that creates photoreal CG cars. The coveted honor will be bestowed November 17th, 2016 at the 11th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. A jury of industry experts selected The Mill BLACKBIRD® during the recent presentation and judging session in Los Angeles.

Developed by The Mill over a three-year period, the BLACKBIRD® was designed to address problems faced by the advertising industry when creating content for automobile commercials: car availability, model revisions, limited access to locations, and footage that can quickly become outdated. The Mill BLACKBIRD® is a car rig that can be shot at any time, in any location, without the need to rely on a physical car. The length, width, wheels, and suspension of the rig can be adjusted or swapped to mimic almost any car in development or on the market. Its electric motor can be programmed to simulate various driving experiences, and The Mill BLACKBIRD® packs a camera array and 3D laser scanner to generate a virtual model of the surrounding environment for even more realistic CG renderings. Beyond its advertising applications, the BLACKBIRD® technology enables many design and creative disciplines to test concepts long before manufacture.

Al Thompson, Executive Vice President – The Mill comments: “We are thrilled to be awarded the highly sought after Creativity and Innovation honor at this year’s HPA Awards; being recognized and awarded for The Mill Blackbird’s pioneering technological creativity is a huge achievement for us. The Mill Blackbird® has taken about three years to concept, design and engineer and it really has been a wonderful example of what you can achieve when you get the best minds in the business together. It was the genuine needs of our advertising clients that made the Blackbird® happen and their constant support and input has shaped its design and made it the game changing innovation that it has become.”

Seth Hallen, HPA President, said, “The Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation has opened the door for us to honor excellence in ideas and technologies that fall outside other HPA Awards categories. The Mill BLACKBIRD®, a production and design solution, is a perfect entry for the Creativity and Innovation Award that illustrates why the category was conceived. The Mill has developed an incredibly exciting technology that serves creatives as well as automotive designers that empowers the creative process. This year, the entries for Creativity and Innovation were highly competitive, and we applaud all who entered.”

In addition to the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, the HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects. Other special awards will be presented to Michelle Munson who has been named as recipient of the Charles S. Swartz Award, Herb Dow, 2016 HPA Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, and winners of the Engineering Excellence Award.

Tickets for the 11th annual HPA Awards are on sale now and can be purchased online at http://www.hpaawards.com. Herb Dow, ACE to Receive HPA Lifetime Achievement Award

Leading trade organization honors well-loved post production figure

Herb Dow, ACE

Herb Dow, ACE

LOS ANGELES (5 August, 2016) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has named Herb Dow recipient of one of its most esteemed honors, the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be bestowed during the HPA Awards gala on 17 November, 2016, at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Dow’s experience stretches across five decades, from the cutting room to the most advanced technologies in the evolution of post production.

The HPA Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who is recognized for his or her service and commitment to the professional media content industry. The mission of the award is to give recognition to individuals who have, with great service, dedicated their careers to the betterment of the industry. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given at the discretion of the HPA Awards Committee. It is not bestowed every year.

In announcing the award, HPA President Seth Hallen, said, “Personally and on behalf of the HPA Board of Directors, it is my distinct honor to recognize Herb with this award. From his early days as a television editor to today as an executive helping bring editing to the cloud, he has been a dedicated post production professional for 50 years. On top of that, he is one of the most beloved individuals in our industry and has spent his entire career helping build our community in an incomparable way. He is like the connective tissue in our business, where bringing people together and having a positive impact on everyone he meets has been his life’s work. Most of all, he is a wonderful human being, always willing to help anyone who needs it. Herb represents the best of what our community is about.”

Born in Carmel, California, Mr. Dow was raised in Los Angeles and attended the University of California Los Angeles. He began his career as an apprentice editor at Desilu Studios, progressing to film editor. His credits as a film editor span 20 years and include projects for MGM, Warner Bros, Lorimar, Fox, Paramount, Columbia, Desilu and Universal. Segueing from the role of editor to that of enabling them and the technologies of postproduction, Mr. Dow is considered by many to be the “Godfather of non-linear editing,” pioneering the design and implementation of the Ediflex, one of the first and by far the most popular of the pre-digital non–linear editing systems. As Ediflex grew, Mr. Dow was instrumental in building the company to be a force in the industry. In 1986 Mr. Dow and the team at EdiFlex won a Technical Emmy Award for “Design and implementation of Electronic Editing for Filmed Programs.”

With Ediflex, Mr. Dow had fully entered the next phase of his career, focusing on forward thinking technology and the enablement of the creative process. The number of companies and individuals that he has helped is extensive, facilitating their next level of success. He helped to build Encore Non-linear into the largest Avid editing system rental business in the world. As Senior Vice President of Lightworks, Mr. Dow began a lasting connection with the filmmakers of the future by donating over 30 editing systems to film schools across the US. He then helped create a visual effects division at Encore Video and within 12 months, it grew to become a major force, creating the effects for such hit shows as “Ally McBeal”, “X-Files” and “Charmed.” He was Senior Vice President of the world’s largest fiber network, Media.net. Never one to be tied to convention, Mr. Dow took an entrepreneurial turn in 1998 and founded Sorrells Pickard Gourmet Peanut Butter. He is currently working with Bebop Technology to transition post production to a cloud environment. The ultimate connector, Mr. Dow is a founder of Postproductionpro.com, a LinkedIn for the post industry.

Mr. Dow is a member of American Cinema Editors, UCLA Television and Film Educational Board and F.O.C.U.S. Institute of Film Board of Advisors. He has been a Visiting Professor at UCLA Extension teaching electronic post-production and at Loyola Marymount where he taught “The Art of Film Editing.”

Leon Silverman, past president of HPA and the recipient of last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award, who will present this year’s award to Mr. Dow during the HPA Awards, said, “Herb Dow has not only been the face of technology that has enhanced the creative process, he has been the heart of our community as well. Over the years he has worn many hats, but his hands have consistently helped. Through his infamous “roasts” and weekly post production industry lunches, Herb has been the master of ceremonies who brought our industry together and into the digital age. I can honestly say that Herb is someone who is not just admired for his hard work, but is loved for the joy he brings to everything he does and everyone he meets. What an honor it is for me to honor him.”

Upon receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Mr. Dow said, “To have been selected for this honor means so much to me and to my family. After working as an apprentice, assistant, and finally editor, I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to become part of the technical revolution that changed editing. To this day, I am blessed to work with wonderful friends and collaborators who are changing the ways creative people work. I’ve also had a wonderful partner for the past 51 years, my wife Sandy. We are blessed with three wonderful children, Mark, Dan, and Chris; and two grandchildren, Alex and Jack, with one more arriving soon. My deepest appreciation to my friends at the HPA.”

In addition to The Lifetime Achievement Award, other special awards include Engineering Excellence, The Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, The Charles S. Swartz Award, honors in twelve creative categories – editing, visual effects, sound and color grading – will be bestowed at the gala. Earlier, Michelle Munson was named as the recipient of The Charles S. Swartz Award.

The HPA Awards will be handed out on November 17, 2016, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California.

Seth Hallen, President of the HPA, says of the announcement, “The Charles S. Swartz Award has special meaning to the HPA. It is bestowed with thoughtful consideration, and only when the Board and the Awards Committee feel that there is a worthy and undeniable recipient. Michelle Munson is such a person. Her intellect, talent, technical leadership, and entrepreneurial creativity represent the very cornerstone of what the Charles S. Swartz Award is meant to recognize. We are honored to present this award to Michelle.”

Michelle Munson is the co-inventor of Aspera’s Emmy award-winning FASP® transport technology and is responsible for overseeing the company’s direction in collaboration with co-founder, Serban Simu. Munson was a software engineer in research and start-up companies including the IBM Almaden Research center before founding Aspera in 2004. She has dual B.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering and in Physics from Kansas State University, was a Goldwater Scholar for achievement in Science and Mathematics, and later was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University where she received a postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science. The youngest recipient ever of the 2006 KSU College of Engineering Alumni Fellow, Munson has also received national achievement awards from Glamour Magazine and USA Today and is a frequent speaker on technologies and trends around big data transport, cloud infrastructure, and mobile.

Munson said of the award, “I am grateful to the HPA and to all our customers and partners in the digital media industry who have supported us since our original humble beginning, and continue to shape and drive the development of our products and technology. I am tremendously honored to have received this award, and will continue to support and promote the technology innovation and entrepreneurial business spirit embodied by this award.”

The Charles S. Swartz Award may be conferred on a person, group, or company that has made a significant artistic, technological, business or educational impact across diverse aspects of the media industry. The award was named in honor of the late Charles S. Swartz, who led the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California from 2002 until 2006, building it into the industry’s premiere test bed for new digital cinema technologies. In addition to a long and successful career as a producer, educator and consultant, Mr. Swartz served on the Board of Directors of the HPA. Past recipients of the Charles S. Swartz Award include Ben Burtt, Elizabeth Daley, and Ray Dolby.

In addition to the Charles S. Swartz Award, the 11th annual HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories, including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects. Other special awards will be presented to winners of the Engineering Excellence Award, the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, and the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award.

HPA OPENS 2016 CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD AND JUDGES AWARD FOR CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

11TH Annual HPA Awards Now Accepting Submissions
for Two Prestigious Awards

April 6, 2016 (Hollywood, CA) The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA®) has announced that the call for entries will open today for two coveted HPA Awards: the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation. Submissions will be accepted from April 6, 2016 to May 20, 2016. These special awards will be bestowed at the 2016 HPA Awards gala on the evening of November 17, 2016 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is recognized as one of the most important technology honors in the industry, spotlighting companies and individuals who draw upon technical and creative ingenuity to develop breakthrough technologies. Submissions for this peer-judged award may include products or processes, and must represent a step forward for its industry beneficiaries. The date for presentations to peer judging panels will be announced soon, and is scheduled to take place on a Saturday in June in Los Angeles. Past winners have included Dolby, Canon, NVIDIA, MACOM, The Foundry, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Panasonic and Quantel.

The sought-after HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling and/or technical innovation. Submissions for this special award can include content such as a unique feature film, TV program or commercial, a workflow, proprietary technical development, hardware or software toolset, or a creative approach that is not eligible for consideration in other HPA Award categories. A blue ribbon panel determines the award’s winners following the presentations in June. Past winners have included ESPN Digital Center 2, DigitalFiIm Tree, the American Society of Cinematographers: Color Decision List (ASC CDL), Testronic and EFILM.

Seth Hallen, President of the HPA, noted, “The Engineering Excellence Award shows us, year after year, the brilliance of the individuals and companies who consistently help creative vision come to life. Our entrants master and share their ideas and technical acumen, which helps foster and drive creativity. To see the presentations for both Engineering Excellence and Creativity and Innovation, and to witness the competitive playing field where the presenters operate, is inspirational. As we enter our second decade of the HPA Awards, the industry has grown to place great value in being recognized for these awards. As the call for entries in these categories kicks off our 11th season, we look forward to the submissions which represent the latest in our industry’s excellence and innovation.”

Joachim Zell, Chair of the Engineering Excellence Award noted, “The most important part of the HPA Awards is the opportunity to show how our efforts enable creativity for storytellers. The Engineering Excellence Award has always been a highly competitive honor that gives the engineering community a chance to be recognized for the invaluable and important work in which they are engaged. The Creativity and Innovation Award is equally prestigious, recognizing the brilliant ideas that don’t necessarily fit neatly into other categories. We strongly encourage you to enter your ideas.”

Entries for both the Engineering Excellence Award and the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation will be accepted until May 20, 2016.

In addition, the HPA Awards will again honor important craft categories including Outstanding Color Grading, Editing, Sound and Visual Effects for feature film, television and commercials. The call for entries in these creative categories will be announced shortly.

Complete rules, guidelines and entry information are available at www.hpaawards.com, and here. For more information about the HPA Awards, visit www.hpaawards.com.

A chat with post production veteran Leon Silverman

This industry mainstay will be receiving the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award this month.

By Randi Altman

Leon Silverman is an industry icon. He’s GM of the Digital Studio at Walt Disney Studios and president of the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA), the organization that is presenting him with its Lifetime Achievement Award on November 12.

I’ve known Leon for a very long time, meeting him for the first time when he was a senior executive of LaserPacific. He was then, and still remains, a genuinely good guy who has done a lot to help create a feeling of community within an industry filled with competitive businesses. He has also been a big supporter of me personally, for which I will always be grateful.

Anyway, not long before the late October SMPTE Conference in Hollywood, Leon was kind enough to talk to me about the Lifetime Achievement Award, the SMPTE and HPA growing partnership and the industry in general.

Leon will be accepting the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award on November 12.

When I asked him how it felt to be chosen for this honor, he was humble, saying, “It’s flattering, embarrassing, and it means a lot to me. It reminds me of those who have helped, mentored me and taught me in my life and career — those who helped me along the path. What it’s really about is how the industry has made transitions, and how the recognition of me is really the recognition of a lot of people who contributed to transformative change in our industry.”

Leon’s passion for the media and entertainment business started early — he says ever since he could remember. In school he was the projectionist and worked at the high school radio station. He was also known to hop the train into downtown Chicago and stare into the window at the WLS radio station and watch them broadcast. He thought it was “the most interesting thing in the world.” So imagine how he felt after taking a tour of CBS Television with his friend’s dad. He was hooked.
