The 13th annual gala awards presentation will be held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California on the evening of Thursday, November 15, 2018.

The HPA Awards were conceived to draw attention to the talent and innovation that fuel the professional media content industry. This year, two additional creative categories have been announced to reflect the evolution of the industry. The category additions were based upon input on the changing nature of the industry from core creative constituents of the HPA Awards, the editing and visual effects communities.

  •  Outstanding Color Grading – Feature Film
  •  Outstanding Color Grading – Television
  •  Outstanding Color Grading – Commercial

Submissions for consideration in the Creative Categories will be accepted between May 16 and July 13, 2018. Early Bird Entries (at a reduced entry fee for the Creative Categories) will be accepted through June 11, 2018. To be considered eligible, work must have debuted domestically and/or internationally during the eligibility period, September 6, 2017 through September 4, 2018. Entrants do not need to be members of the Hollywood Professional Association or working in the U.S.

The Call for Entries for the HPA Engineering Excellence Award opened last month. Submissions for the Engineering Excellence Award will be accepted until May 25, 2018. Again this year, the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation is a juried award and will be announced in advance of the Gala and the HPA Lifetime Achievement Award will be announced in the coming weeks.

Seth Hallen, president of the HPA and a founding member of the HPA Awards Committee, commented, “As the variety, quantity and quality of content and the ways we consume content continues to grow and evolve, the HPA continues to evaluate how we can best honor the amazing achievements in the post production industry.  This year, we are proud to announce two additional categories in an effort to shine a light on the outstanding artists whose work we all enjoy, no matter what screen or delivery platform. The HPA Awards is an opportunity to have hard work and talent recognized by the artists’ peers.  We hope these enhancements make that even easier.  I want to personally encourage individuals and companies to submit their best work for consideration.”

The HPA Awards are made possible through the generous sponsorship of Foundation Members Avid, Co3, Deluxe, Dolby, EFILM, and Encore; and Platinum Sponsor IMAX. For sponsorship or program advertising opportunities, contact Joyce Cataldo at jcataldo@hpaonline.com. Announcement of ticket sales will be made in June.

Hollywood Professional Association Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation Conferred Upon NASA, Amazon Web Services, and AWS Elemental

Award Recognizes Groundbreaking International Space Station Live 4k Stream

November 9, 2017 (Burbank) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has awarded the organization’s prestigious Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to NASA, Amazon Web Services, and AWS Elemental, an Amazon Web Services Company, for the first public Live 4K stream from the International Space Station (ISS). The honor, whose recipient was selected by a jury of industry veterans, was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process or project to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. The coveted distinction will be bestowed November 16, 2017 at the 12th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

In 2006, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) achieved a broadcast industry milestone when the agency successfully produced a live high-definition (HD) transmission from space. On April 26, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time (US) at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the 2017 NAB Show, NASA crossed another threshold in advanced video innovation as it delivered live 4K video from the ISS. The live feed from 250 miles above Earth was encoded using AWS Elemental video processing software on board the ISS and on the ground at Johnson Space Center for delivery by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the cloud to the Las Vegas Convention Center and to viewers globally on multi-screen devices.

According to NASA, the opportunities that live 4K video unlocks for the agency are significant: in addition to enhancing NASA’s ability to observe, uncover and adapt new knowledge of orbital and deep space, there is the visual impact of “live” versus recorded video. The 4K images can also benefit the work of scientists by helping engineers and payload developers better monitor experiments as well as spacecraft performance, and aid trouble-shooting.

Speaking on behalf of the jury, jury co-chairs Carolyn Giardina and Joachim Zell said, “The technology and workflow that enabled last spring’s inspiring live 4K broadcast from the ISS will be further used by NASA in conducting scientific research and sharing its work with the public. On behalf of the jury and the HPA, it is an honor to recognize the tremendous achievement born of this partnership.”

Communications Manager for NASA’s International Space Station Program Dylan Mathis commented “NASA is honored to receive this award from HPA.  The project was important to our team for many reasons, including its advancement of scientific progress while also offering an exceptionally engaging viewing experience to people who simply want to see what the ISS really looks like, the astronauts onboard and incredible images from space.”

“Extremely high-resolution video from the ISS helps support exploration, observation, and discovery by NASA scientists in space and on the ground. The cloud helps the public have an incredibly immersive educational experience of space at scale,” said Keith Wymbs, Chief Marketing Officer for AWS Elemental. “It was thrilling to collaborate with NASA and with our colleagues at the National Association of Broadcasters on this milestone.”

In addition to the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, the HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and

visual effects during the gala on November 16, 2017. Other special awards bestowed that night include the Engineering Excellence Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, to Larry Chernoff.

Tickets for the 12th annual HPA Awards are on sale now and can be purchased online at http://www.hpaawards.com. More information about the HPA Awards and the Hollywood Professional Association can be found at www.hpaonline.com. Title Sponsor Blackmagic Design; Engineering Excellence Sponsor HGST; Foundation Members Avid, Company 3, Deluxe, Dolby, EFilm, and Encore; and Platinum Sponsors IMAX, Secret Headquarters, and Sohonet are among the sponsors of the 2017 HPA Awards, which are produced by Homerun Entertainment.

HPA Announces 2017 Engineering Excellence Award Winners

Coveted Honors Go to Colorfront, Dolby, RED Digital Cinema, SGO

11 July 2017 (Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) Awards Committee has announced the winners of the 2017 Engineering Excellence Awards.  Winners were determined after a judging session held on the 17th of June, after presentations to a panel of industry experts. The coveted honor will be bestowed November 16, 2017 at the 12th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The Engineering Excellence Awards were created to spotlight and reward companies and individuals providing services to the professional media content industry for their outstanding technical and creative ingenuity in media, content production, finishing, distribution and archive. The HPA Awards launched in 2005 to recognize creative artistry, innovation and engineering excellence in the professional media content industry.

Joachim Zell, Chair of the HPA Awards Engineering Committee said, “Entries for the Engineering Awards were at a one of the highest levels ever, on a par with last year’s record breaker, and we saw a variety of serious technologies. The HPA Engineering Excellence Award is meaningful to those who present, those who judge, and the industry. It sounds a bit cliché to say that we had a very tight outcome, and it was a really competitive field this year.  Congratulations to the winners and to the nominees for another great year.”

Winners of the 2017 HPA Awards for Engineering Excellence are:

  • Colorfront Engine (Colorfront)
A state-of-the art, automatically managed, ACES-compliant color pipeline which brings plug and play simplicity to today’s complex production requirements, Colorfront Engine ensures image integrity from on-set to the finished product. Colorfront Engine’s Master Look uses a partial subtractive color model and is well-suited for EFX compositing due to its neutral gray scale & offers a perceptually balanced wide range color palette with particular emphasis on good skin tones in varying conditions.
  • Dolby Vision Post Production Tools (Dolby)
Dolby Vision Post-Production tools integrate into existing color-grading workflows for both cinema and home deliverable grading. The goal is to preserve more of what the camera originally captured and limit creative trade-offs. This is achieved by unique Dolby technology and its leveraging of dynamic metadata shot by shot and frame by frame to preserve dynamic range and the wider color gamut and to best deliver the artistic intent of the filmmakers on multiple different displays.
  • Mistika VR (SGO)
Mistika technology represents the cutting edge in finishing, offering the most modern, complete and flexible toolsets available today for post-production environments. Mistika Ultima is SGO’s turnkey offering for post production used at some of the biggest post houses in the industry. Mistika VR is SGO’s latest development and is an affordable VR focused solution with real-time stitching capabilities using SGO’s optical flow technology.
  • WEAPON 8K Vista Vision (RED Digital Cinema)
WEAPON with DRAGON 8K VV sensor delivers stunning resolution and image quality, creating clean and organic images that bring your footage to life. RED has taken the next step in exceeding the flexibility and beauty offered by film. At 35 Megapixels, 8K offers 17x more resolution than HD and over 4x more than 4K.

Honorable Mentions will be awarded to Canon U.S.A. for Critical Viewing Reference Displays and Eizo Inc. for ColorEdge CG318-4K.

In addition to the honors for excellence in engineering, the HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.  Larry Chernoff will receive the lifetime achievement award.  The Judges Award for Creativity and Engineering will be announced by September.

Tickets for the 12th annual HPA Awards will be available for purchase at http://www.hpaawards.com. Larry Chernoff To Receive 2017 HPA Lifetime Achievement Award

Respected post production innovator will be honored during HPA Awards

Los Angeles (June 19, 2017) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has announced that Larry Chernoff has been named 2017 recipient of the prized HPA Lifetime Achievement Award. Chernoff will receive the award during the HPA Awards gala on November 16, 2017, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California. The HPA Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual who is recognized for service and commitment to the professional media content industry. The mission of the award is to give recognition to individuals who have, with great service, dedicated their careers to the betterment of the industry. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given at the discretion of the HPA Board and Awards Committee and it is not required to be bestowed every year.

As the recipient of the Los Angeles Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1997, Chernoff is recognized as a talented entrepreneur, helping to found and lead several successful post production companies that, in turn, have launched hundreds of post-production careers. He has built companies and impacted the industry by fostering innovation and by nurturing talented young people to develop their craft, believing that they are the key to a company’s, and hence the industry’s, future. At the vanguard of inventive, creative and collaborative professionals who have led the post production industry, he is a tireless champion of the industry, a keen interpreter of its strengths and needs, and an architect of its future.

Chernoff grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and attended New York’s School of Visual Arts. Between high school and college, at the age of 18, he landed a job as a “can carrier” at a commercial production house. Once there, he learned to sync dailies. When an editor called in sick, he was asked to fill in, thus beginning his editing career.

In 1974, Chernoff moved to Los Angeles and joined Filmcore, a recently formed commercial editing company. Within two years he became partner, going on to play a lead role in the founding of post houses Encore and R!OT. He served as President of 4MC, later Ascent Media Creative Services, overseeing operations in Los Angeles, New York and London.

Chernoff joined MTI Film as a board member in 2003 and was elevated to CEO in 2005. Under his stewardship, the company has become a leading independent provider of post-production finishing and restoration services. Its software division has been the source of products including DRS™ NOVA, an industry standard tool for digital restoration, and CORTEX, a family of solutions for dailies processing and workflow management.

In announcing the award, HPA President Seth Hallen said, “Larry is one of the most thoughtful and insightful leaders I have ever known. His sense of the industry, his understanding of its trends, and his ability to build successful facilities where creative people love to work make him incredibly worthy of this Lifetime Achievement Award. On a daily basis, I meet people who got their start under his tutelage. Larry has literally helped build the future of our industry through the talent he’s nurtured, the companies he’s built, and the innovations he’s created.  I extend my congratulations to a brilliant and inspiring leader.”

In acknowledging the honor, Chernoff said “I am, of course, honored to be recognized by my peers. I follow an illustrious list of previous honorees who, like me, have dedicated their professional lives to the advancement of post production and its standing in the industry.  I share this award with many people who have consistently partnered with me to create outstanding contributions to the work and industry we love.”

In addition to The Lifetime Achievement Award, other special awards, including Engineering Excellence, The Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, and honors in twelve creative categories (editing, visual effects, sound and color grading) will be bestowed at the gala.

Tickets for the HPA Awards gala are available now. For further information, contact HPA.

HPA Announces Winner of Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation

HPA Announces Winner of
Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation
The Mill BLACKBIRD® Chosen by Blue Ribbon Judging Panel

29 August 2016 (Los Angeles, CA) – The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) has awarded its prestigious Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation to The Mill BLACKBIRD®. Created by The Mill, the BLACKBIRD® is the first fully adjustable car rig that creates photoreal CG cars. The coveted honor will be bestowed November 17th, 2016 at the 11th annual HPA Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

The HPA Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation was conceived to recognize companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence, whether in the development of workflow and process to support creative storytelling or in technical innovation. A jury of industry experts selected The Mill BLACKBIRD® during the recent presentation and judging session in Los Angeles.

Developed by The Mill over a three-year period, the BLACKBIRD® was designed to address problems faced by the advertising industry when creating content for automobile commercials: car availability, model revisions, limited access to locations, and footage that can quickly become outdated. The Mill BLACKBIRD® is a car rig that can be shot at any time, in any location, without the need to rely on a physical car. The length, width, wheels, and suspension of the rig can be adjusted or swapped to mimic almost any car in development or on the market. Its electric motor can be programmed to simulate various driving experiences, and The Mill BLACKBIRD® packs a camera array and 3D laser scanner to generate a virtual model of the surrounding environment for even more realistic CG renderings. Beyond its advertising applications, the BLACKBIRD® technology enables many design and creative disciplines to test concepts long before manufacture.

Al Thompson, Executive Vice President – The Mill comments: “We are thrilled to be awarded the highly sought after Creativity and Innovation honor at this year’s HPA Awards; being recognized and awarded for The Mill Blackbird’s pioneering technological creativity is a huge achievement for us. The Mill Blackbird® has taken about three years to concept, design and engineer and it really has been a wonderful example of what you can achieve when you get the best minds in the business together. It was the genuine needs of our advertising clients that made the Blackbird® happen and their constant support and input has shaped its design and made it the game changing innovation that it has become.”

Seth Hallen, HPA President, said, “The Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation has opened the door for us to honor excellence in ideas and technologies that fall outside other HPA Awards categories. The Mill BLACKBIRD®, a production and design solution, is a perfect entry for the Creativity and Innovation Award that illustrates why the category was conceived. The Mill has developed an incredibly exciting technology that serves creatives as well as automotive designers that empowers the creative process. This year, the entries for Creativity and Innovation were highly competitive, and we applaud all who entered.”

In addition to the Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, the HPA Awards will recognize excellence in 12 craft categories including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects. Other special awards will be presented to Michelle Munson who has been named as recipient of the Charles S. Swartz Award, Herb Dow, 2016 HPA Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, and winners of the Engineering Excellence Award.
